Summer Swimming Lessons for Kids in Every State (2026–27): Dates, Prices and When to Book

Three Australian states run a government-backed summer learn-to-swim program, and the first booking deadline is four weeks away: enrolments for Western Australia's VacSwim close on 14 October 2026, for lessons from $16.50 a child. South Australia's VACSWIM is taking enrolments now, and Victoria's VICSWIM Summer Kidz says its 2027 enrolments open "towards the end of 2026". In New South Wales, Royal Life Saving NSW runs SwimVac, with registrations opening on 1 October. Queensland, Tasmania, the ACT and the Northern Territory don't run an equivalent open-enrolment program — what they offer instead is swim vouchers and school lessons.
Every date and price below was read on the program's own page on 15 September 2026. Where a program hasn't published its 2026–27 details yet, we say so instead of carrying last year's over.

Western Australia: when do VacSwim enrolments close?
VacSwim enrolments for summer close on 14 October 2026. The Department of Education WA runs the program at more than 175 pools and beaches for children aged 5 to 17, and each child can enrol in one summer program:

South Australia: how much is VACSWIM?
VACSWIM costs a $39 program fee plus a location fee set by each venue, and enrolments for 2026–27 have been open since 1 September, with no closing date published. The SA Government subsidises the program fee; the location fee is where venues differ. Glenelg Beach adds $25 ($64 in total) and Adelaide Aquatic Centre adds $43.50 ($82.50).
- Dates: five-day blocks from 14 to 18 December 2026, then 4 to 8, 11 to 15 and 18 to 22 January 2027, at about 140 locations.
- Lessons: 45 minutes for pre-school to Level 2, an hour from Level 3, and 1.5 hours for Community Surf or Pool Rescue.
- Ages: 3 to 12, with courses for 13 to 15-year-olds working towards higher awards.
- The subsidy covers one block per child. Enrol in a second and the program fee rises to $72.50. Families with four or more children have program fees capped at $122, but every child pays the location fee.
- Sports Vouchers can't be used. VACSWIM says it is already subsidised and doesn't accept them.

Victoria: when does VICSWIM Summer Kidz 2027 open?
Not yet. VICSWIM says enrolments "will open towards the end of 2026", and its site currently reads "VICSWIM Summer Kidz 2027 coming soon". What it does publish: five 30-minute lessons at the same time each day, Monday to Friday, for children aged 4 to 12, across three weeks in January at locations around the state. Its FAQ lists the price as $43 a week.
Last season is the best guide to timing. For January 2026, bookings opened at 10am on Wednesday 12 November 2025, and $43 covered all five lessons and pool entry, according to Peninsula Leisure's notice. The Victorian Government delivers the program with Aquatics and Recreation Victoria, but its Sport and Recreation Victoria page still shows the January 2026 weeks (last updated 12 November 2025), so don't plan from it. New South Wales: is there a summer swim program?
NSW has no Department of Education holiday program, but Royal Life Saving NSW runs SwimVac, with the NSW Government listed as a supporting partner. It offers daily intensive lessons from 11 to 22 January 2027 for children aged 3 to 14; book one week or both.
- Preschool: 30-minute classes, $45 a week.
- School age: 45-minute classes, $55 a week.
- Registrations open 1 October 2026 on the SwimVac page.
Two more things NSW families should know:
- Free lessons for some families. The NSW Office of Sport's $6 million Learn to Swim program funds 15 providers to deliver free learn-to-swim and water safety lessons to people from low socioeconomic groups, multicultural communities, First Nations people and people in regional and remote areas. If your family was born overseas, check your local provider.
- Active and Creative Kids can apply. The NSW voucher guidelines list swimming, and holiday programs and camps, as eligible, but only with a registered provider whose swim staff hold accreditation. Ask before you rely on it.

Queensland, Tasmania, the ACT and the NT: what help is there?
None of the four runs an open-enrolment summer swim program like the ones above. What they do have:
- Queensland: Play On! Learn to Swim vouchers worth up to $150 go towards lessons for children aged 0 to 4. They're closed right now, with new vouchers to "open for applications soon". The separate Play On! Sports Voucher ($200 for ages 5 to 17) excludes them: "learn to swim lessons are ineligible".
- Tasmania: Tasmanian Government schools run ten consecutive swimming and water safety lessons each year for all students in Years 3, 4 and 5, plus some Year 6 students. We couldn't confirm whether Ticket to Play vouchers cover learn-to-swim lessons, so check with the program before you book.
- ACT: there's no ACT Government summer swim program or learn-to-swim voucher, but Royal Life Saving ACT runs Swim 4 Life — free lessons for children aged 4 to 12 in the January, April and October school holidays, including pool entry. Places are by nomination through community partners such as The Smith Family and Uniting Care, not open booking.
- Northern Territory: children under five who aren't yet at school can get two $100 Learn to Swim vouchers a year, one in January and one in July. Families register for the water safety awareness program first, then apply through GrantsNT.
What does an hour of swimming lessons cost?
The subsidised summer programs are the cheapest structured time in the water most families will find. We divided each published price by the total time in lessons:

$5.33 an hour. That's the price of a January VacSwim program in WA, about a tenth of the $51.40 an hour of council term lessons we checked in NSW.
This compares price, not quality. Summer programs are short, intensive group blocks; term lessons build skills week by week, and class sizes differ. VICSWIM's $43 is last season's price, so treat it as a guide until the 2027 price is published.
Why book now? What the 2026 drowning report found
Royal Life Saving's National Drowning Report 2026, released on 10 September, counted 313 drowning deaths in 2025–26. That's down from 357 the year before, but still 10% above the 10-year average.
Young children are the good-news group. Eleven children aged 0 to 4 drowned, 39% below the 10-year average, and 55% of those deaths were in backyard pools. Children aged 5 to 14 had the lowest drowning rate of any age group, but the rate climbs sharply from 15 to 24. Royal Life Saving also found that 39% of people who drowned were born overseas, where country of birth was known.
For families still getting to know Australia's beaches and pools, that last figure is worth knowing.
Where can my child keep swimming after summer?
A summer block lasts a week or two; skills stick with regular lessons. AroundSchools lists 1,543 swimming providers (swim schools, clubs and public pools), which is 19.4% of the 7,953 kids' activities in our directory.

In SA, Sports Vouchers can go towards term swimming lessons, as long as the provider is affiliated with Swimming SA, Surf Life Saving SA, AUSTSWIM, Royal Life Saving SA, Swim Australia or the Australian Swim Schools Association and the program runs for at least eight weeks.
